The word ‘legend’ is used too lightly these days. But Charles Mahon Bayfield, better known as Bunny Bayfield to generations of KES pupils, was a pucka, 100 per cent legend at the school that he first knew as boarder, at the tender age of eight.
Bunny went on to be captain of both the school and his house and lead the 1st Eleven football, cricket and hockey teams!
After university in Cambridge and a colourful career in colonial Africa, Bunny returned to KES as a maths teacher, in 1955, becoming deputy head in 1969, before eventually retiring in 1973.
Former KES scholar Patrick Staines knew Bunny as both teacher and uncle and he has written an affectionate tribute to this true giant of a man, which you can now read in our ever-growing Archives section.
